Review: Park Ji Yoon Lays Down A Sweet Beat On 'Mr. Lee' Featuring San E [VIDEO]

With Lee Hyori recently married and on indefinite hiatus, there is a gap in K-pop for a solo singer mixing the flavor of sexy fun with the daring search for a great party beat.

K-pop may have found, at the very least an excellent stand-in for K-pop's Queen of the "Bad Girls" in Park Ji Yoon, whose new single "Mr. Lee" featuring San E is currently number two in its second week on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100.

And setting aside the obvious physical similarities and the fact that Park exudes the same mixture of sophistication and sex appeal as Lee, the understated vocal style of Park with just the right amount of power is also reminiscent of the "Miss Korea" singer.

Chart-topping solo singers like IU or Lim Kim (Kim Ye Rim) are excellent for the introspective, folky or jazzy sound that they are bringing to K-pop, but there is something to be said for a good old fashioned pop diva who just wants to lay down a great hook over a slamming beat.

In her most innovative early days that's who Madonna was, and that's the mold that Park Ji Yoon seems to be cut from.

Park's delivery is laid back and confident in a song that is a cacophony of virtuosic DJ scratching, slick jazz guitar chords, a barn burner of a horn section and a 1990s-infused hip-hop beat that would Tribe Called Quest rapper and producer make Q-Tip proud.

And on the subject of rappers, it is worth mentioning the hot fire that rapper lays down on the track. It is the perfect compliment to Park's smooth delivery and an excellent way to bring the song into the present moment.
